Picture it: a flock of BMX kamikazes, armed with nothing but a shaky Nikon D3300 and a fish-eye lens that resembles a discarded scratch card—oh, not to forget the eighth of draw. Anyway, after 3½ years of pedalling around and finding jibs, “The Fish Tape” finally emerges—not just as a video, but as a Covid relic stamped with sweat, laughter, and more attempts than hot dinners. Featuring the likes of Connor Bone, Gabriel Ash, James Harding, Callum Browning, Alex Thomas, Dan Chester, Kieran Foster, Bradley Gibbs, Tom Butland, Jamie Skinner, Jack Panther, Mike Hilton, Allander,
Stuart Wright, and Ben Porter.
This stands as one of the most beloved BMX time capsules ever filmed in Plymouth.
The BMX street glory days!
or was it? ….
Armed with nothing but a 6mm Allen key and a pocket full of grubby money that people apparently call euros, the Unhealthy Krew touched down in Málaga, much like countless BMX riders before us and It’s safe to say we proudly reinforced the infamous reputation Brits have in Germany — or wherever the f**k it is.
What began as a “chill winter getaway” quickly degenerated into something else entirely. Before we knew it, we were sitting on seven minutes of pure gold. Nights blurred together, usually huddled inside a humble local gem known as The Good Burger, trading laughs and reviewing clips until closing time.
Gracias por todo, Málaga.
No single person or company was behind the shift from MiniDV tapes to digital storage. It was a slow, industry-wide evolution led by giants like Sony and Panasonic. But we at Unhealthy Krew saw straight through the propaganda — so instead of chasing convenience, inspired by the likes of deadline and filmed an entire 50-minute video on ancient MiniDV tapes.
Now, you might be thinking: “But there’s conversion tech that lets you use those cameras and record straight to an SD card, keeping the same look.” Yeah… well, that wouldn’t have been very street. Plus, we didn’t even know it existed.
Thirty-five hours of twisted takes later, The Last Tape was born. And as the name hints, there really was one tape lost to history. I still daydream about it — what was on there could’ve shifted a generation.
It was easily the worst and best decision of my life to take on this project. What a beautiful waste of time.
